OnePlus 6T, Xiaomi Mi Mix 3, Nokia 8.1, and more get Google ARCore support
Google’s ARCore platform attempts to bring augmented reality experiences to the masses, without needing dedicated hardware for spatial recognition as was present on the Asus ZenFone AR. ARCore allows new as well as several existing devices to sense the environment around them, understand the world and subsequently allow for interaction with that information. ARCore utilizes motion tracking, environmental understanding and light estimation to integrate virtual content with the real world as seen through the phone’s camera.
Over the past several months, more and more devices have been getting official ARCore support. Adding on to this list are more devices from Huawei and other OEMs:
- Huawei Honor 8X
- Huawei Honor View 10 Lite
- Huawei Mate 20 X
- Huawei Porsche Design Mate 20 RS
- Nokia 8.1
- OnePlus 6T
- Samsung Galaxy J7 (2017), Galaxy J7 Pro – (SM-J730 models)
- Sony Xperia XZ3
- Xiaomi Mi Mix 3
Interestingly, the Nokia 8.1 has not been officially announced yet, though rumors point that this may be the global variant of the recently released Nokia X7.
Another interesting appearance in the app’s device profile are “Bonito” and “Sargo”. As per AndroidPolice, the Bonito is expected to be a mid-range Google device, sporting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710; while the Sargo may be another Google-branded phone due to its fish-based codename.
For a device to be officially support by Google ARCore, it has to pass Google’s certification process. This is done by checking the quality of the camera, motion sensors and the design architecture to ensure that the device can deliver good performance. You also need a powerful CPU to carry out real-time calculations effectively. The certification process ensures that ARCore integrates well with every officially supported device from Android’s diverse ecosystem, and provides for a good experience on those devices. The full list of supported devices can be viewed at Google’s Developer Resource for ARCore.
